Level Up Lab

Design and code your very own video game

Level Up Lab is a creative, play-based group program where children learn how to design, build, code and refine their own video game.

Children start by drawing their game elements on paper, characters, goals, hazards, platforms and moveable objects, before uploading them to a device where their game becomes fully playable and editable.

Through this process, children learn core coding concepts in a hands-on, visual and highly engaging way..

About this Program

In the game

  • A green avatar is the main character that the child controls
  • Blue objects are the goals to collect in order to win

  • Yellow and purple objects are moveable elements

  • Red objects are hazards that reduce lives

  • Black areas are solid platforms or blockers

Children design the rules, test how their game works, problem-solve when something doesn’t behave as expected, and refine their game to make it more fun and challenging.Children design the rules, test how their game works, problem-solve when something doesn’t behave as expected, and refine their game to make it more fun and challenging.

The program is built around five key coding principles, supporting children to:
Once their game is built, children can play their own game and explore games created by others, supporting confidence, connection and collaboration in a group setting.

Level Up Lab supports far more than coding. It builds:
• Problem-solving and logical thinking
• Planning, sequencing and attention
• Creativity and imagination
• Confidence, autonomy and persistence
• Peer interaction and shared play

Designed using The Play Projects’ neuro-informed, strengths-based approach, this group supports learning through curiosity, creativity and meaningful play, not pressure or perfection.
