THE MOST COMMON CAUSES OF POOR HANDWRITING

It’s great to see you taking the time to learn more about why your child may be experiencing difficulties with their handwriting.

In this section I explain some of the key aspects of how our body grows, the impact this has on learning, and how the activities that your child does each day can make a huge difference in their handwriting development. Firstly, I need to explain how our senses work because the better you understand why your child is finding some things hard, the easier it will be for you to help them.

OUR SENSES

The table below represents how our Central Nervous System Develops. Most of the growth in the central nervous system happens between the ages of 0-6 years. You will notice that the sensory system makes up the foundation building blocks of this system, whilst academic learning (including handwriting) develops last and is reliant on all of the other systems to be working effectively for it to develop well.

Our senses start developing before we are born and without them we wouldn’t survive. They form the basis for all learning. Most of us are familiar with 5 of our senses

Vision, Hearing, Taste, Smell, and Touch.

However, we have 2 internal senses that most people haven’t heard of and these are even more critical for development. You can see them depicted in the image above as the foundation (or the base building blocks) for our development. Lets take a closer look at what they do:

Vestibular system (Balance sense)

This sense is located in our inner ear and is often referred to as our balance sense. Children who have experienced any of the following are more likely to have difficulties with vestibular functioning:

  • chronic ear infections
  • premature birth
  • neglect and trauma in infancy
  • other neurological conditions such as autism

When this sense hasn’t developed properly they are likely to have difficulty with balance, jumping, hopping, skipping, sitting still, concentration, managing fear/anxiety and learning to read and write.

Proprioception (Body Awareness)

This sense is located in the muscles and joints all over our body and is often called the body awareness sense as it tells our brain where our body is in relation to itself and other things.

Children with poor proprioception often present with the following:

  • appear clumsy
  • are too rough (unintentionally)
  • break things easily
  • bump into things
  • are unable to sit still for long periods of time
  • have trouble concentrating
  • have difficulty with reading and writing

These 2 senses are the foundation building blocks for all other skills. If we skip over them and just teach reading skills, or just teach letter formation, then it doesn’t matter how much practice we have or support we give, the skill just won’t stick.

Your child may have a beautiful pencil grasp and nice letter formation but if they don’t have a functioning vestibular system, then their writing is likely to be much slower than their peers, messy, and difficult to read.

For most children, this is something that you can overcome. When you incorporate the activities in our handwriting program into your current routine you will see improvements in their handwriting without even picking up a pencil. This is great for kids with poor handwriting as chances are they hate picking up a pencil (because it’s hard for them).

The activities in this course are fun and effective, not only for improving handwriting but for setting children up for success in all areas of their learning.

HOW TO USE THIS PROGRAM AT YOUR PLACE

The program is designed so that it can be completed in as little as 10 minutes per day, at a time and place that works with your existing routines.

In the first few weeks of the program, the more time that you can put in the quicker you will see your child moving through the levels.
